US data-center electricity use in 2030: LBNL reference case and compounded-uncertainty range (share of total US electricity)

649 TWh (11.8%); range 521–843 TWh (9.5–15.3%)forecast

Value kindforecast — Forecasts are time-bound outlooks, not specifications; test decisions across plausible scenarios.
ScopeAll US data centers, total electricity, excluding cryptocurrency mining. Shares are of NERC's 2025 Long-Term Reliability Assessment forecast of 2030 US electricity. The latest historical year is 2024 (192 TWh, 4.7%); the update revises earlier years slightly below the December 2024 report.
CaveatThe 521–843 TWh range pushes every sensitivity to the same extreme at once, which LBNL calls unlikely. The reference case follows current trends and does not model grid, supply-chain or regulatory limits.
